Patent and trade mark attorneys Marks & Clerk has opened a new office on the Harwell Campus, a major centre for research and development, particularly in ‘big science’, located 15 miles south of Oxford.

The office opening forms part of a strategic effort by Marks & Clerk’s Oxford office to reach out to start-ups and SMEs in the Oxfordshire area in order to build on its portfolio of clients in the region, including Tokamak Energy and Crown Packaging.

Marks & Clerk also has a focus on space technologies, a key industry represented on the Harwell site, and is a sponsor of the European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC).

The Harwell Campus hosts a wide range of cutting-edge facilities, including the Diamond Light Source and the Isis Neutron Source as part of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) and has been open for over 60 years. The Harwell community includes over 5,000 people and some 180 organisations. Key UK research councils, start-ups and multinational organisations that focus on a range of commercial applications including life sciences, medical devices, space, detector systems, computing, clean technologies and new materials are all present on the site.

Dr Stephen Blake, patent attorney at Marks & Clerk, Oxford, commented: “The Harwell site is full of impressive organisations that are at the forefront of their fields. The potential for increasing our collaboration with the Oxfordshire science community offered by an office on the Harwell Campus fits perfectly with our aims to work with the region’s most innovative companies.

"We’re excited about the opportunity to help start-ups, SMEs and large corporates, at the front line of research into their fields, to take full advantage of their intellectual property, with a new location at the hub of research activity.”
