Thames Valley: Small window of opportunity for local businesses to have their say on immigration policy

In July, the Government commissioned the independent Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to advise on the economic and social impacts of Brexit and how the UK’s immigration system should be aligned with a modern industrial strategy.

Earlier this month, the MAC issued a call for evidence seeking views from a wide range of groups including businesses, employers, recruiters, academics, think tanks, and representative bodies. The information received will help the committee shape its recommendations to Government and inform future immigration policy, particularly in regard to EEA (European Economic Area) nationals.

Leading law firm Penningtons Manches, which has offices in Reading and Oxford, is running a short survey of local businesses covering the key points of the call for evidence– which closes in October – and will incorporate the findings in its response.

Partner Pat Saini, head of the firm’s specialist immigration team, said:

“I cannot stress enough how important this consultation is in influencing the way in which businesses will be able to employ EEA nationals post Brexit. Thames Valley companies currently attract a large number of EEA nationals across a variety of sectors and many are understandably confused or concerned about what mechanisms will be in place in two years’ time. We are preparing a comprehensive response to the consultation and want to give our clients and the wider local business community a chance to contribute.”
