Southampton: Barratt Homes to redevelop Moorgreen Hospital in West End
Moorgreen Hospital in Southampton was built in 1848 to the designs of noted architect Charles Henman. Much of the site has been derelict for some years and now Barratt Homes is bringing it back to life, preserving and converting the former workhouse and gatehouse buildings into housing.
Over the years, the building has acted as a workhouse, a public assistance institution, a hospital and a hospice. Now a total of 121 homes will be built on the site and Barratt Homes has given its Zany Zebra the name Henman after the original architect.
The housebuilder is supporting Marwell’s Zany Zebra trail, which has seen 150 colourful zebra sculptures spring up across Southampton City Centre this summer.
Tim Hill, managing director, said: “The decision to be involved in Marwell’s Zany Zebra project was a no-brainer; it’s a fantastic initiative that not only supports a very worthy wildlife charity but also encourages people to explore the great city of Southampton. Coming up with a name for our zebra however was more of a tricky challenge.
“We had so many great suggestions but in the end our inspiration came from our latest project in Southampton, in which we’re redeveloping the Moorgreen Hospital in West End into much-needed homes.”
Hill said: “I’m sure Charles Henman would have been proud to have inspired the name for our zebra. The artwork, by talented artist Rachel Blackwell, would also no doubt have been something he would very much appreciate.”
