Southampton: Highways Agency to upgrade M27 junctions
The Highways Agency is starting upgrades to junctions three and five of the M27 as part of the Government's £317 million programme on motorways and trunk roads.
The enhancements will eventually reduce congestion, increase safety and improve journey times.
They have begin just weeks after it was revealed lanes were fully open on the M27 for just 10 days in the whole of 2013. A Freedom of Information request showed that lanes were affected by closures on 355 out of 365 days, due to road works and traffic collisions.
Ed French from the Highways Agency said: "We have planned the work carefully to minimise disruption and will carry out as much of the work as possible overnight, when traffic flows are at their lowest."
There will be overnight closures, narrowed lanes and reduced speed limits on the M27 near Southampton until spring 2015.
