Steel company John Reid & Sons (REIDsteel), which employs more than 130 people in Dorset and exports to countries around the world, has launched new development plans.

REIDsteel is aiming to move to a new state-of-the-art facility after outgrowing its existing home of more than 50 years in Christchurch.

It is proposing that up to 220 new homes be built on its site in Reid Street after it leaves for new headquarters elsewhere within the borough.

The company, which celebrates its centenary in 2019, has commenced consultation about its proposals for housing on the site in Reid Street and intends to lodge an outline planning application by the end of the year.

It is holding a public exhibition for local residents, businesses and the community from 4pm to 8pm in the community room at Christchurch fire station, Fairmile Road, Christchurch.

Simon Boyd, REIDsteel managing director, said: “These exciting development plans will allow our business to invest in the latest technology and increase productivity, which will create more jobs and support the local economy while also providing much needed housing.

“It will also mean the removal of an industrial operation from a predominately residential area, and associated reductions in heavy traffic movements and noise.

“Our public exhibition will provide more information about the plans for housing on our site in Reid Street after we leave and will give people the chance to have their say.

“We are looking forward to telling people more about our ideas and welcome their views about proposals.”

REIDsteel has the capacity to design, manufacture and supply entire steel buildings – including their cladding and glazing – anywhere in the UK, Europe and across the world. It has exported to more than 140 countries to date.

It contributes £2 million to the local supply chain in addition to salaries for its staff, many who live in the Christchurch area.

When the company moves to its new location it says it will substantially reduce traffic movements from Reid Street, cutting the company’s carbon footprint and reducing noise and disruption for neighbours. It is aiming to relocate its operations within the boundaries of Christchurch Borough Council.

In a multi-million-pound investment, the new complex will bring facilities all under one roof with cutting-edge equipment, more environmentally sustainable operations, better access and modern offices.

REIDsteel is a four-times winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (International Trade).
