Businesses across Portsmouth are getting involved with a national campaign to help find a cure for brain tumours.

Dozens of companies from around the city have already pledged their support for the Brain Tumour Research charity’s annual Wear A Hat Day campaign, the UK’s premier brain tumour awareness event, on Friday, March 29.

Among corporate supporters already signed up are Specsavers, Hobbycraft, Portsmouth Business Exchange, Portsmouth City Council, and A-to-Z Health in Southsea.

Also taking part are employees at Zurich Insurance, who have already raised £12,000 for Brain Tumour Research following the death of a much-loved member of staff last year.

Wear A Hat Day has raised over a million pounds since it was launched by Brain Tumour Research. The big day will see schools, workplaces, families and individuals across the UK fundraising and taking part in fun events to raise awareness of brain tumours and help fund life-saving research.

Tim Green, senior community fundraising manager for Brain Tumour Research in the South East, said: “It’s great to see so many businesses from across Portsmouth already signed up to don their hats and raise money for Wear a Hat Day 2019. We would like to thank everyone for their support. We’ve always had a fantastic response from companies around Portsmouth for Wear A Hat Day and this year is no exception.

“Every year thousands of people are given the news that they have a brain tumour. The money raised from these events will go towards funding the fight into this devastating disease.”

Brain Tumour Research funds sustainable research at dedicated Centres of Excellence in the UK, including its centre at the University of Portsmouth. It also campaigns for the Government and the larger cancer charities to invest more in research into brain tumours in order to speed up new treatments for patients and, ultimately, to find a cure. The charity is calling for an annual spend of £35 million in order to improve survival rates and patient outcomes in line with other cancers such as breast cancer and leukaemia.
