Reading misses out......
How disappointing that Reading was not successful in achieving city status.
It makes you wonder who makes these decisions. Why confer city status on a Welsh town in the back of beyond that few people have even heard of. St Asaph in Wales is best known as the birthplace of Liverpool striker Ian Rush.
Its sole contribution to the UK economy has been….well, they have yet to tell us.
Reading is the largest urban “sub-division” in the UK to be without city status. It is a city in all but name, and yet once again its overtures have been ignored.
Either someone in Reading has done something very bad to the office of the deputy prime minister, or perhaps to the Royal Family, or the Queen decided to have a laugh. It is her Jubilee Year, so we can forgive her.
But when Reading has made such a key contribution to the UK economy, it makes you wonder what it still needs to do to win over the city conferrers. St Asaph spent just £300 on its city bid. I suggest Reading sends its next bid in a single email, and let’s them get on with it….
