Solent University, Southampton has announced the launch of two new schools to meet growing demand and a burgeoning population of university-age students.

Solent Business School and Solent Law School have been launched in response to an increasing need among students for real-world learning and ‘future readiness’ that will enable them to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing socio-economic landscape.

Solent-UniThe two new schools will offer flexible degree courses which allow students to pursue specialist knowledge and graduate with a transferable skill set – putting them in control of their future career aspirations.

Solent Business School will help its graduates take on pivotal roles in helping UK businesses address the skills challenge and take advantage of future economic opportunities in a post-Covid era, while Solent Law School graduates will develop the professional awareness and personal attributes needed to effectively continue their development after university.

Professor Karen Stanton, vice-chancellor of Solent University, Southampton, said: “Our University motto is ‘Ready for Anything’ and it’s important that our courses and academic staff actively prepare students for their future careers. Our two new schools embody this ethos, alongside the agile, innovative, creative and enterprising nature of Solent itself.

“Solent has a reputation for producing grounded, well-prepared graduates with the knowledge and experience employers want. By helping them develop and use their skills sets through the many opportunities available to them, through real-world learning and applied assessments, they will be ready for the world of work.”

Well-connected with the local business and legal communities, the schools will continue to work with organisations, charities and legal chambers to collaborate on research, consultancy projects and creative briefs, as well as to provide students with valuable work experience opportunities.

Caroline Walsh, director of Solent Business School, added: “There has never been a greater need for a business education to help us solve some of society’s biggest social and economic challenges, created in part by Covid-19 and Brexit. Whether students have a passion for music, art, technology or law, we want Solent Business School to provide a gateway to something bigger and better. As an engine of change, growth and innovation, we will take our students on a transformational journey to equip them with the real-world skills they need.”

Kevin Rogers, director of Solent Law School, commented: “The way in which we work and conduct our everyday lives has changed beyond measure, which has meant we’ve all had to become more agile and flexible in the way we approach things. We want to arm students with the real-life experience they need to succeed in whatever field they choose, whether that’s law or otherwise. Our new law school will provide students with a range of experiences in which they can truly practice what they might go onto do in employment.”

To mark the launch of the schools, Solent University’s chancellor, Theo Paphitis joins former lawyer and secretary of state for education, Baroness Morgan of Cotes to discuss how universities, businesses and entrepreneurs can bounce back from the pandemic and the important role the new schools have in shaping the business and legal landscape.

On Thursday November 26, Solent Business School is hosting a virtual open day for prospective students and their families. You can register to attend here.
