A Thames Valley lawyer who has qualified as a notary public says his additional skillset will enable him to help an increasing number of clients with international links.

Paul Lowery, a partner in the private client team at specialist tech law firm Boyes Turner, qualified as a notary public after two years of studies at University College, London.

His new role, which he will undertake alongside his existing position with the Reading-based firm, enables him to help corporate clients and private individuals by authenticating and certifying signatures and documents for use primarily in transactions with an international element.

The notary public work, which will be an additional service Lowery will offer within Boyes Turner, is a distinct part of the legal sector, requiring a separate qualification and regulated by the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury as opposed to the Solicitors Regulation Authority which covers the majority of the legal sector.

As well as certification of documents, a notary also makes sure that clients understand the documents they are signing and that the matter is properly executed in English law and, as far as possible, complies with the law of the country where the document is to be used.

As well as being a leading regional firm in the UK, Boyes Turner has a growing number of international clients, particularly related to the Thames Valley’s strong tech sector, and Lowery said the notary role would be good news for clients with links abroad.

“I’m delighted to have qualified as a notary and look forward to getting started, helping private and business clients to achieve their ambitions in whatever country they will be trading in or moving to,” he said.

“We’ve seen a significant interest in recent years in international clients coming to Boyes Turner for help and this is one more important string to our bow to ensuring our clients have access to all the services they need to be successful.”

Lowery, a partner in the wealth protection team, was one of 39 Boyes Turner lawyers recommended in the most recent Legal 500 directory listings, in which the firm was ranked in the top tier for the South East in seven categories.

Alongside his new notary role, he also specialises in the preparation of wills, including complex wills with a foreign element, trusts and trust administration, estate planning for high net worth individuals, probate and estate administration including complex estates and elderly client work.
